How China’s Great Firewall Can Make Us More Productive

You want what you can’t have. This fundamental aphorism of human psychology means that full-stop censorship is the wrong approach to hiding ideas and information. The taboo, by definition, makes the information desirable, regardless of whether the content is revelatory or mundane. The insight is that you can use this knowledge on yourself to reshape your own behavior.

China’s great firewall carefully circumvents the want-what-you-can’t-have desire. When I last visited Beijing I tried to access the BBC expecting it to be blocked. Instead, the site came through slowly and erratically. If I waited long enough, refreshed often enough, the page just might come through. Because of the sporadic experience, I found my frustration was directed at the BBC and not at the firewall. Even with a conscious knowledge of what was going on, I had a visceral reaction that it was the BBC’s fault and not a country-wide censor.

We can use the same trick to increase our own productivity. It suggests a new kind of tool that helps us focus. One which doesn’t block, but instead limits. One which makes the path of productivity also the path of least annoyance.

The idea is very simple: every time you access a site which is procrastinatory it gets randomly slower. The first time in the day it goes at full speed, but by the fourth time you’ve looked at it, the site crawls sporadically like it’s behind the great firewall of China. Let’s call it the productivity proxy.

It’s enforced annoyance, but one where waiting for the page to load even when slowed is easier than turning off the block; all you have to do is wait. I’ve found that when Reddit doesn’t load in the first seven seconds, I’ll close the site and return to what I was doing. More generally, by making those little hits of joy take longer, it gives our brain the time it needs to reflect on what it’s doing; to rationally value the delayed gratification of doing the work, instead of opting for the emotional hit of instant gratification. In the end, just like with the great firewall of China, your visceral annoyance will be directed towards the procrastination site and not the productivity proxy. It trains you subtly to want to be more productive.

The joy we all get out of procrastination is the dopamine release we get when we see or learn something new. It’s what keeps us clicking on link after link on Wikipedia, and what keeps us looking at picture after picture of demotivational posters. In order to break these habits successfully, we need to ween ourselves off the dopamine. Our brain, in a real sense, is addicted to the constant influx of new. It’s why we check our email constantly: our brain seeks that random reward of a new and potentially important piece of information. Telling yourself that you are not going to procrastinate anymore is just about as effective as telling yourself that you are going to quit smoking cold-turkey. We need the equivalent of nicotine patches for our brain. That’s the productivity proxy.

Slowing procrastinatory sites, instead of blocking them, is the jujitsu of productivity and the mind.

Seeking: I’m looking for a developer who wants to help me turn this idea into a functioning proxy. There are already a couple of simple proxies out there, written in both Python and for Node.js to which it should be easy to add the productivity filter. Funny you should mention reddit specifically. I’m actually approaching it as if it were an OCD to check reddit. Today I’m trying an experiment based off of something I saw in David Burns’ “When Panic Attack” (a book about using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to treat all different forms of anxiety related issues).

What I’m doing is a combination of “self-monitoring” along with “response prevention”. It’s response prevention in that you just don’t do the usual response (e.g. go to reddit when you’re stuck on something at work) and ride out the wave of anxiety that comes.

With self monitoring I just started keeping a tally on the inside cover of a notebook that I have. I use self monitoring because I’m going to keep track of how many times each day I get the urge to go to reddit but prevent myself from doing it.

So far, my count is 20, in the first half of my work day, but I haven’t actually checked reddit today. (Actually I did try to load reddit a couple times, realized what I was doing, and closed the tab before I saw anything.) It’s frustrating at first, but then the frustration disappears after a minute.

If it goes as well as the example in the book, within a month the number of urges I get should drop to, or near, 0. Seems like a long time, but I’m already saving a ton of time by not checking reddit.

I know what you’re getting at when you talk about making it harder to change the filter than it is just to wait for the site to load, because I’ve tried using leechblock (to outsource my self-control to a program), and the thing about that is you can turn it off, once you decide “screw it, I’m reading reddit right now.”

      Well, today was a complete disaster. I started reading reddit before work hours, and I never completely cut it off for the rest of the day.


Fun idea, something I’ve tried myself several times before – whether it be updating my hosts file for the most common procrasti-sites to localhost … or even taking it a step further by packet limiting them on my companies proxy (yay for being the administrator who looks after it).

It all boils down to one inevitable fate though, I can turn it off. I can literally sit there and my mind takes over and decides “sod it, I’m going to read the BBC now” … it’s almost like it requires some sort of mental implant.

Fascinated to see how this pans out.

    That’s the problem I’ve always encountered: if I know how to turn it off and it is a full block, I’ll always end up turning off the block. My hope is that by making it easier to wait for the annoyance to pass than turning it off, the productivity proxy would change the calculus and the impulse to turn off the blocker would wane.

      That’s the problem I always counter first: I’ll make it more time consuming and annoying to undo than to actually do.

      Once, I changed the root password to a very long random one and sent it by post to myself — all because I wanted to finish that !@#$%^&*() weekend assignment on time.

neat idea! why not hook into http://www.rescuetime.com/ and do the slowing client-side? seems like a nice fit and they have a good list of productive and non-productive sites. they already have a feature to block productive sites for a given time period.

Perhaps during the initial loading of the site, during the “delay” a statistic can be presented stating:

“this is your nth visit today, x minutes have been spent today, y minutes over the past 3 days”.

The statistics page before entering the site is actually a good idea.
Why not force us to read the message to find a link to the web page we were trying to access (instead of an auto-refresh) : it’s going to be as annoying as those ‘welcome pages’ that we see here and there on the web, and every time you would have to click, you could have another chance to get back to work.

Ugh, what a truly awful idea. It’s flawed from first principles. If we accept the assertion introduced by the very first sentence that “you want what you can’t have” then clearly if you can’t have web access unmolested by this rather Orwellian “productivity proxy” you will circumvent it if it’s on a system you don’t control or disable it if it’s on a system you do control.

I think the simple explanation here is that your frustration at the BBC is, as you suggest, deeply misguided which misled you into following a line of reasoning that reaches the conclusion that a so-called “productivity proxy” is a good idea.

The best way to increase productivity is to give people autonomy. This is what makes democracy, on the whole, good and totalitarianism, I feel sure you’ll agree, bad. I advise the exercise of your will without this chastity belt for the web. It may be that the results astonish you.

I have relatives who have trouble keeping a leash on their credit card. Living without a credit card, however, is a hassle; it can be very useful when ordering things online, booking hotels, etc. What did they do? I’m at their home for dinner one evening and out of their freezer they pull a giant block of ice. In the middle I can see the foggy outline of a credit card. “If we really need it, we wait for the ice to melt.”


Perhaps we can make the “productive” activity more fun, rather than making the “procrastination” activity more painful.

    Any ideas on how to implement such an idea, John? A better carrot is general more awesome than a better stick, but I as of yet don’t have any insight into how to make work more mentally sticky.


Since im a great procrastinator, I like the idea and I think you are completely right on the basis, but the main problem comes when you know that you are tricking yourself, so that if you really want to procastinate, you will find the way to do it, and in addition loose more time.

If this should happen, it should do it in a way that the user wouldnt know that its done intentionally, so that the frustration is frustration itself and prevents procrastinating. Maybe we can trick ourselves if we know that the method is using random delays, so that some times acts but otherones doesnt (also including the +visits=+delay rule)

Couldnt this be easily done with a extension? The problem would become then the ability to switch browsers, but hey, its a way to do it to get the prototype done

I think the China parallel is pretty flawed. If you spent more time in China and are this concerned with your Internet life, you’d have a functioning proxy at ready to circumvent these problems. Then you’d be left with your own autonomous will to regulate what you do online.

When you don’t have a censored connection, you have that same autonomous will. I have have to say, if you’re trying to trick yourself, you’d better build a robust, tamper-proof thing that one can’t disable with a few keystrokes. It comes down to being mindful about time and work.

Logging out of reddit helped me. Once I stopped downvoting and upvoting for a while, I got to see how my sense of making a difference made me want to use it. With downvoting and upvoting disabled, I still would want to use it on occasion, but not every day.

Being productive 100% of the time isn’t necessarily the best state of affairs though, right? You’d have to make sure the productivity proxy automatically turns off at 5pm, or something — lest we become pleasure-deprived robotic automata…
