Firefox Image Editor: 14 Lines of Code
Jetpack makes it super-fast for any web developer to make Firefox extensions. 14 lines of code is all it takes to write an extensions that let’s you edit any image you find on the web.
Try it out!
Drew Willcoxon has some great examples of Jetpack, context menus, and Twitter working together. To find out more about creating menus in Jetpack, you can read the pretty pretty documentation.
Here’s a quick challenge: What can you make using Jetpack in 14 lines of code?

wow.
that’s all I have to say. I will absolutely be playing with Jetpack in the next couple weeks.

Thanks, Matt! Can’t wait to see what you make. Post it back here when you are done.

Wellllll….. No. 14 lines of code that are enough to invoke the minified 300+ lines of JS of pixlr_minified.js. The Jetpack code itself does nothing to edit the image, and that must be said.
But 14 lines are enough to attach a context menu invoking that editor to all images in all web pages, yes.
So based on 14 lines of code counted like that, I can do whatever you want.
Drew
@Daniel: Good point. How about 14k of assembly then?
Aza Raskin
@Daniel: Good point. Then I’d amend the challenge as follows, using pre-existing tools, libraries, APIs, and services, make something totally awesome in 14 lines for Jetpack.

Oh for the love of engineering, *how* many years must there be before we create comment forms that are smart enough to just encode HTML entities instead of stripping them. I meant “Insert <video> here”.

Flash is doing all the heavy lifting… much more than 14 line there.
Adam
Wait.. how did u get syntax highlighting in there?
1. It would be in future builds
2. It is an add-on that integrates (what looks to me like) bespin :)
3. Jetpack already had it from the start and it doesn’t work for me :(
By the way this is win 7 with jetpack 1.6.1 and firefox 3.5.5

Well then if I embed Gecko engine in my app could I claim that I wrote entire rendering engine in few lines?
Ok, Jetpack is great but this kind of publicity just sucks.

This isn’t about implementing new features, this is about adding existing features to the browser. With jetpack, you can stop worrying about where the functionality lives, because it works just like a part of your browser. Stop complaining about “Flash is doing all the heavy lifting” that’s not the point.
Aza Raskin
@Adam: Currently syntax highlighting only works on OS X. In the next release of Jetpack, we should have Bespin working for all platforms.
@lockoom: sep332 has it right. The web is about standing on the shoulders of giants. If you could embed Gecko in one line of code and build something interesting in a couple more, then yes you could claim a minimal-code browser. It’s about the end result.

Hi Aza, what kind of JavaScript construction is:
function(target) ( { … } )
What are this parenthesis doing after anonymous function declaration, around { } object syntax?
And btw what is the hidden logic behind on(“img”)?

WOW. That’s really nice editor. I had tried this. Now, my browser runs extremely fast.

Looks still complicated ;)
You should add a jetpack method to inject a JS in the page!

Every time I come to http://www.azarask.in there is another remarkable article to read. A friend of mine was telling me about this topic several weeks ago. I think I will e-mail them the link here and see what they say.
