New Ubiquity Logo: An Open Process
Ubiquity needs a new logo. Something less abstract. Something a more iconic. Something that shouts awesome. The first logo was done pre-launch, before a strong community had formed around Ubiquity. This time the logo is being designed in the open, in a way that everyone can participate in the dialogue.
The designer leading the process is Sebastiaan de With of Cocoia. You can follow along and participate in a internet-time discussion on Twitter, on this blog post, or on Sebastiaan’s.
Open Question: What are strong metaphors for Ubiquity? Swiss army knifes, the enso mark, and conversation comes to mind. That’s for me. What about you?

The first thing that comes to mine with me are gears meshed together with letters on them…sort of symbolizing language driving different activities across browsers..

Royall’s ideas sounds good kind of a play on the Weave logo. What about a kind of tag cloud with words interspersed together with the enso mark embedded in the background kind of pushing through the words in a 3D effect.

Sorry, I got nothing particularly witty, but I’m thinking that the more child-oriented, the better. That’s pretty much why I’m typing up flexible and fun toys (silly putty was the shiznit).

Typical questions I ask when designing icons/logos:
– Where will the logo/mark be used? Is this for alpha/beta stuff or do you expect to show the icon to the user?
– Apart from what it does functionally what is the vision?
– How should this mark work with other logos/marks? Firefox, Thunderbird, etc?
If the Firefox logo is flying over the internet world then perhaps Ubiquity would be the interconnected world.

“Connect the web”
For me ubiquity tears down the walls of the browser. I’ve hidden the search bar and my bookmarks and most of the buttons.
The awesome bar is now the “meh” bar because what it does is comparatively lame compared to what ubiquity does for me.
So ubiquity connects the web but in doing so also blurs the borders of sites and web services. It really becomes a place where web services can get as much utility as web pages. Seriously it’s the best web 3.0 application since RSS, and I would argue that it has the potential to be even more powerful.
I know that developers like us will find stuff like this particularly cool. I hope the more typical users will agree.
So that’s just my take on what Ubiquity is, and I feel getting the essence of something is the first step to creating an identity.
first things that come to mind to me is a “page” icon with an arrow through it, disolving the borders. Idea being that actions occur with pages but are not limited to them.
Hopefully that gives someone an idea.

This is a nod to two things — first, that tea is the most ubiquitous beverage in the world after water, and second, “Tea, Earl Grey, hot” is a simple, iconic, and well-known example of using language to communicate with a computer. Also, it’s satisfyingly nerdy.

A key unlocking the Firefox logo might convey the idea of discovering better functionality in the browser/Web.
I also like the idea of representing language somehow. Wikipedia’s logo is one of my favorites, and might serve as inspiration in this regard….

How about a patchwork quilt?
It symbolizes the many commands you can subscribe to that make up something beautiful: Ubiquity.
(Although, a quilt doesn’t bring to mind ‘a utility’ or ‘tool’ even though it is one.)

You could play with connecting the image of chain links (connecting, linking, strength) to the image of a Mobius strip (cool, one line goes through all points, etc)
A couple of connected chain links shouldn’t be too hard to morph into a mobius strip

Wow — there’s some excellent ideas. @Ruben I love the idea of clay or playdough. Shaping something with your own hands where one lump has a million possibilities. @dria I think that would be an awesome logo for a feedreader :) @ChrisJF I love the idea of the community-aspect of a patchwork quilt. As you say, it might not be right for Ubiquity, but we should keep that metaphor around! @Craig Yep — I think the Enso mark is on the way out.

Since you called it “Ubiquity”, the logo should show something ubiquitous.
- Maybe in a very simple way like a sun, enlightning everything.
- Some bubbles, showing the omnipresence of air (well, that’s a bad suggestion)?
- A pen(-cil) that stands for the ubiquity of words, of language, of power, of knowledge. Furthermore, a pen is the almighty tool (Besides a towel (q.v. Douglas Adams)).
So far the thoughts of a layman with poor English.

So the logo might have a modern firefox/web intregration look – Fox with a net over the world
Or simply the world inside the ‘U’ of ubiquity
